Bob Muglia, senior vice president of Microsoft's Windows Server
division, in an interview last week discussed the road map for future
operating system releases, the competitive threat posed by Linux and
the promise of 64-bit computing. Part 1 of the interview follows:

Q: How is Microsoft differentiating itself from the Linux competition?

Q: What's the difference running an ERP application on Windows vs.
Linux?

Q: How can users get an edge by running non-Microsoft applications on
Windows instead of Linux?

Q: For which server workloads are you seeing the most competition from
Linux?

Q: How soon do you think Windows Server 2003 for 64-bit extended
systems will catch on?

Q: Do you know any customers who have tried it?

Q: Has Microsoft tested it internally?

Q: What about your customers who already run 64-bit Windows on Intel's
64-bit Itanium processors?

Q: Are people running 32-bit applications on Itanium?

Q: Will Longhorn have 32- and 64-bit releases?

Q: It's also more work for Microsoft to support 32-bit and 64-bit,
isn't it?

Q: Is it likely you'll have to support 32-bit to accommodate companies
that are slow to upgrade?

Q: For what other reasons might there need to be a 32-bit Longhorn
release?
